MediaWiki is a CMS used by thousands of organisations worldwide. The most well known of its supporters and the primary force behind its ongoing development is the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia.
Wikipedia has around 12 million registered users who have performed over 370 million edits to over 3.2 million pages. For the latest figures see Wikipedia Statistics.
In the Wikipedia environment, with statistics like that there is no question of the robustness of MediaWiki, and why ITw3 quickly realised its potential for creating websites and intranets for individuals and companies where uptime, ease of use, change control and security are paramount.
Most organisations employing MediaWiki solutions generally have the need for a web site or intranet where many users can collaboratively add content, maintain an audit trail of all content changes, and where necessary secure the content from unauthorised access.
The online encyclopeadia Wikipedia choose to operate in an open mode, as even unregistered users can edit most pages (although that is likely to change soon). However, when the system administrators want to restrict page edits, MediaWiki has strong security in place to ensure pages remain secure from anyone other than those authorised to make changes.
It is this built-in security that enables ITw3 to build MediaWiki solutions for its customers as the one-stop solution for their web sites and intranets.
The collaborative nature of MediaWiki also helps with content creation.
All web pages link to other web pages, with the option for dozens of links between pages, hence the term 'World Wide Web' or 'w3'. MediaWiki makes it extremely easy to manage those links, and has built in tools to enable creation of new pages whilst editing existing pages and reports to show which pages are still to be created.
It is a truly organic design approach to web site creation.
We've packaged up the standard MediaWiki CMS tools, and added a few new ones including an HTML editor, to create the ITw3 Content Manager, probably one of the easiest to use CMS consoles available.
All CMS solutions will include the ability to customise the appearance of the content. The code that achieves this is generally called the 'skin'.
We specialise in creating 'skins' for MediaWiki which mirror an organisation's corporate image. You're looking at one right now! Have a look at our Portfolio to see a small selection of the variety of 'skins' that can be created with the open structure of MediaWiki.
The basic requirement for creating a new skin is a little imagination and creative development from ITw3.
